The Silicon Review
11 July, 2024

The agreement positions Romania as an important hub for Hanwha Aerospace’s ground plans in Europe

In a significant step to strengthen its defense capabilities, Romania has signed a major $1 billion contract with South Korean defense giant Hanwha Aerospace. According to the deal announced at a NATO summit in Washington, Romania will acquire innovative artillery systems, making it the third to embrace the K10 Ammunition Resupply Vehicles and the world’s 10th operator of the Self-Propelled Howitzers of Hanwha's K9.

Underscoring the agreement’s potential to bolster bilateral kinship, Jaeil Son, President and CEO of Hanwha Aerospace, reaffirmed the importance of this strategic partnership with Romania. As per the deal, Hanwha Aerospace will closely cooperate with Romanian businesses, facilitating local manufacturing and employment opportunities. The time period is five years, and the first artilleries are anticipated to be ready by the first quarter of 2027. Furthermore, the agreement positions Romania as an important hub for Hanwha Aerospace’s ground plans in Europe, enabling regional defense cooperation and integration into a global supply chain. At the same time, underscoring synergies with the K9 artillery system to streamline operational efficiency and maintenance, Hanwha Aerospace has proposed its Redback Infantry Fighting Vehicle for another Romanian defense program.

In line with NATO’s collective security objectives discussed at the summit, the agreement underlines Romania’s commitment to foster its defense capabilities in the face of evolving security challenges.
