Nintendo to Open Museum in Kyoto, Celebrating Over a Century of Gaming History
The Silicon Review
20 August, 2024

The museum's main attraction will be its extensive collection of video games and consoles featuring legendary systems

Nintendo is set to open a new museum in Kyoto, Japan, on October 2, 2024, offering fans a nostalgic journey through the company's 135-year history. The museum, housed in the original factory where Nintendo began producing Hanafuda cards in 1889, will highlight the evolution of the brand from a toy manufacturer to a global gaming powerhouse.

Visitors will experience a comprehensive display of Nintendo's iconic products, including early non-video gaming items like copy machines, baby strollers, and RC cars. The museum's main attraction, however, will be its extensive collection of video games and consoles, featuring legendary systems like the Famicom, Wii, Game Boy, DS, and the Nintendo Switch. Notably, the Famicom exhibit will showcase regional variations of the console, with game boxes and cartridges from Japan, the U.S., and Europe, each featuring unique artwork. A highlight of the museum tour is a batting cage where visitors can interact with Nintendo products in a game setting. Additionally, there is a virtual shooting studio devoted to the SNES Super Scope and NES Zapper.

In addition to the exhibits, the museum will offer a shop with exclusive merchandise, a café, and eight interactive experiences. Tickets are priced at 3,300 yen (approximately $23), with discounts available for children and teens. Reservations can be made through the museum’s website, although early spots are expected to be in high demand.
