Buruli Ulcer Spreads Across Vi...Buruli Ulcer, a flesh-eating infection linked to possums, is spreading across Victoria, Australia.
Victoria's health authorities have issued a stark warning over the spread of Buruli Ulcer, a flesh-eating bacterial infection that can cause serious disfigurements. The infection, caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans, has been increasingly detected across the state, with case numbers this year higher than in previous years.
According to a report from the Victorian Health Department on Friday, the Buruli Ulcer disease that was earlier reported in a few coastal areas has spread across the areas such as Mornington Peninsula, Westernport, Bellarine Peninsula, East Gippsland, and even Frankston and Langwarrin, and parts of south-eastern bayside area like Torquay, Anglesea, and Essendon.
According to Professor Ben Cowie, Chief Health Officer of Victoria, the disease can affect anyone, though notifications are highest among people aged 60 and above. "Lesions usually begin as a painless lump or wound, which can initially resemble an insect bite," said Professor Cowie. "It can take up to five months for an ulcer to develop after infection."
Health experts believe that possums and mosquitoes play key roles in transmitting Buruli Ulcer, as the bacterium responsible for the infection is found in possum excrement. Researchers have also noted that possums with ulcers and open sores are a potential source of the disease. Authorities advise people to avoid handling possums and coming into contact with their faeces.
Warmer months bring the risk of infection, but the disease is not person-to-person transmissible. Experts suggest protection by wearing gloves and long sleeves while gardening or outdoors, mosquito-proofing homes, and avoiding sick possums.
Other regions of Australia, particularly parts of New South Wales, have indicated cases of Buruli Ulcer. Scientists in the Batemans Bay in NSW have cautioned that there may be spreading across the area in a similar manner to that experienced in Victoria.
