Avangrid Expands Clean Energy ...Avangrid to develop 800MW renewable projects to meet data center energy demand.
Avangrid, Iberdrola's U.S. subsidiary, is planning to develop six new power projects worth 800MW to respond to the increasing energy requirements of data centers. The projects, being built or ready to come on stream in a matter of months, will add to the nation's increasing demand for clean and power-packed energy.
With a broad portfolio across 24 states and a pipeline exceeding 25GW, Avangrid is moving to become one of the energy suppliers of note to leading tech firms. It has already constructed eight renewable facilities for data centers, with combined output of 1.25GW.
"With our robust pipeline and broad presence in renewable energy, we are ideally situated to deliver secure American energy to fuel the expanding data center sector," said Avangrid CEO Pedro Azagra.
To address demand, Avangrid has signed several Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with large data center operators to provide long-term renewable energy supply. In December, Avangrid and Portland General Electric entered into a PPA with Meta and QTS, committing to 120MW of solar energy from the Tower Solar project in Oregon. The power from the project will directly serve Meta's proposed data center and is expected to be in operation by 2026.
Moreover, Avangrid signed a long-term deal with Amazon, providing energy from its 98.4MW Leaning Juniper IIA wind farm in Oregon.
Over 10.5GW of installed capacity in the U.S., Avangrid has more than 75 renewable energy plants operating, generating over 9GW of electricity. With data centers fueling energy usage, Avangrid's growth mirrors the increasing need for renewable energy within the digital economy.
