Singapore's newest tourist attraction breaks ground today: a $1 billion, seven-storey wellness wonderland at Marina South with 20 pools, 18 water slides and over 70 treatment rooms. The Silicon Review explores what awaits visitors when Therme Singapore opens in 2030.

Singapore is getting a tourist attraction unlike anything it has ever seen. A $1 billion, seven-storey wellness destination is rising at Marina South, promising water slides, mineral pools, saunas, and enough plant life to make you forget you are in the city.

Therme Singapore broke ground on June 19, marking the start of construction on Asia's first large-scale integrated urban wellness destination. The facility is expected to welcome approximately two million visitors annually at full capacity, with roughly half coming from overseas and half from Singapore. It is slated to open in 2030.

Located next to Gardens by the Bay and Marina Barrage, the 720,000 square foot development spans over seven floors equivalent to nine football fields of wellness and entertainment. The project will be a gateway for Therme Group's expansion across Asia, with Singapore serving as its regional headquarters.

Visitors will explore three distinct zones. The family-focused Play zone features 18 waterslides with a combined length of about 1.8 kilometres, a wave pool, and indoor and outdoor recreational pools. The Relax zone offers mineral pools, thermal baths, and therapeutic lounging spaces. The Restore zone focuses on deep wellness with saunas, steam rooms, cold plunge pools, and over 70 treatment rooms for massages and therapies.

Indoor temperatures will be maintained at about 30°C, with pools set at 32°C to create a stable tropical environment year-round. More than 200,000 plants, including orchids and palms, will fill the space. A new coastal park spanning nearly 4 hectares around the facility will be free for public access. The facility also includes approximately 86,000 square feet of food and beverage offerings.

Therme Group founder Robert Hanea said the facility is designed as "social infrastructure" that makes wellness "accessible, joyful, and integrated into everyday city life.” Former minister Mah Bow Tan, chairman of Therme Group Singapore, noted that the facility has been nearly a decade in the making.

Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu, who attended the groundbreaking, said Therme Singapore will strengthen the country's position as a hub for tourism, wellness and urban innovation in Asia.

As Singapore's newest tourist attraction breaks ground at Marina South, The Silicon Review examines how Therme Singapore is redefining what a day out in the city can look like.
