Olympic legend Cathy Freeman has pulled her stunning $6 million Gold Coast mansion from the market after four years without a buyer, as the property market shows signs of cooling.

Cathy Freeman has made the call to pull her multi-million dollar Gold Coast mansion from the market after four years without a buyer. The Olympian, whose 400m gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics remains one of Australia's most iconic sporting moments, listed the sprawling property in 2021 with hopes of securing a buyer.

The 6,500 square metre estates in the exclusive Sovereign Islands precinct on the Gold Coast were initially listed for $6 million. Freeman purchased the land in 2013 for $2 million and spent years developing the property into an 807 square metre luxury mansion.

"Cathy Freeman has decided to withdraw the property from the market for now, with plans to relist at a later date, a spokesperson for the listing agent said.

The decision to pull the property comes as the Australian real estate market shows signs of cooling after a prolonged boom. Interest rate rises and cost-of-living pressures have dampened demand in the luxury segment, making it increasingly difficult for high-end properties to find buyers.

The Sovereign Islands estate features six bedrooms, seven bathrooms, a home theatre, a gymnasium, multiple living zones, a stunning infinity pool and deep-water access to the Gold Coast's Broadwater. The home, designed to take full advantage of the waterfront aspect, has floor to ceiling windows and was developed to Freeman's specifications.

"We felt the timing was right to test the market at the time, but with changing conditions, Cathy has decided to wait for the right buyer," the spokesperson added.

Freeman purchased the property in 2013, and spent $4 million building the custom-designed home after demolishing the original residence. The property features a large landscaped garden, private jetty with pontoon, four-car garage and high-end finishes throughout.

The decision to pull the property is a reminder that even the most prestigious homes are not immune to market fluctuations. As interest rates continue to bite and the cost-of-living crisis deepens, luxury properties are taking longer to sell, and some vendors are choosing to wait for better conditions.

Here is the question this withdrawal raises. Cathy Freeman's mansion has been on the market for four years without a buyer. When a property owned by one of Australia's most beloved athletes sits unsold for years, does this signal a shift in the luxury property market, or simply a mismatch between price and buyer appetite?

As Cathy Freeman pulls her $6 million mansion from the market, The Silicon Review asks a final question. When the Gold Coast's luxury market cools and even iconic owners cannot sell, what does that say about the future of high-end property in Australia?
