One person has died and more than 200 have fallen ill in a UK salmonella outbreak linked to imported eggs, with health officials investigating food businesses that use eggs from outside the UK.

A person has died and over 200 people have fallen ill in a salmonella outbreak that UK health officials believe is linked to eggs imported from outside the country. The UK Health Security Agency has identified 207 cases of a specific strain of salmonella over the past year, with most recorded in recent weeks.

"We're working with the Food Standards Agency and other public health agencies to investigate a salmonella outbreak that may be linked to eggs imported from outside of the UK," said Hannah Charles, lead epidemiologist for gastrointestinal infections at UKHSA.

The Scope of the Outbreak

More than a third of those affected have required hospital care, with two developing serious blood poisoning. Patients range from babies to people in their 90s. Most cases have been in England (199), with 47 in London and 38 in Yorkshire and Humber. There have also been six cases in Scotland, one in Wales, and one in Northern Ireland.

"At this time there is no identified link to UK-produced eggs or poultry," the UKHSA stated, noting that hens in the UK are subject to mandatory salmonella vaccinations.

Investigation and Source

The UKHSA is conducting "extensive" epidemiological and food chain investigations, with egg consumption remaining the strongest link. People appear to have fallen ill after eating out rather than after consuming food prepared at home, and some of the food businesses linked to 24 of the cases use imported eggs.

"Increasing volumes of imports produced under less stringent regulations continue to arrive in Britain," said Nick Allen, chief executive of the British Egg Industry Council.

What to Do

The UKHSA advises that thoroughly cooked eggs are safe to eat. Infants, young children, pregnant people, and older adults should only eat runny or raw eggs if they have a British Lion mark or are produced under the Laid in Britain egg assurance scheme.

Here is the question this outbreak raises. A salmonella outbreak linked to imported eggs has caused one death and hundreds of illnesses. When a food safety incident crosses borders, how can the UK balance the need for affordable imports with the need for rigorous food safety standards?

As the investigation continues, The Silicon Review asks a final question. When the UK's own egg industry operates under stricter regulations, is it time to reconsider the safety of imported eggs?

FAQ:

Q: What is the source of the UK salmonella outbreak?
A: UK health officials believe the outbreak is linked to eggs imported from outside the UK. The UKHSA has not identified a link to UK-produced eggs or poultry.

Q: How many people have been affected by the UK salmonella outbreak?
A: There have been 207 confirmed cases of salmonella, with one death and more than a third of those affected requiring hospital care.

Q: What are the symptoms of salmonella?
A: Symptoms include stomach cramps, diarrhoea, vomiting, and fever, which usually develop between 12 and 72 hours after infection.

Q: Where have the UK salmonella cases been reported?
A: Most cases (199) have been in England, with 47 in London and 38 in Yorkshire and Humber. There have also been cases in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
