SpaceX has signed its first customer for Starfall, its orbital reentry capsule business, with Luxembourg-based Space Cargo set to fly on the first commercial Starship mission in 2028.

SpaceX has secured the first customer for its new Starfall business, a service designed to return products and payloads from Earth's orbit. Luxembourg-based mission integrator Space Cargo will fly on the first commercial mission of SpaceX's Starship rocket, scheduled for 2028.

Space Cargo will place its "BentoBox" system inside SpaceX's Starfall capsule, positioning itself as an integrator that can secure up to 1 ton of payloads from its own customers for the mission. The BentoBox is designed to protect diverse payloads through the intense heat and forces of reentry, allowing them to be safely returned to Earth for commercial use.

"We're flying 200 kilos with our current systems, but with Starship and Starfall, we're going to go to ton and tons of customer payloads, and that's really what we want," said Space Cargo CEO Nicolas Gaume.

SpaceX's Starfall is a disk-shaped capsule launched aboard Falcon 9 and eventually Starship. It features an aluminum housing protected by a 10-foot (3-meter) heatshield, a commercial application of SpaceX's experience ferrying its larger Dragon capsules between Earth and space for NASA.

The Starfall program emerged earlier this year and completed a demonstration mission in June. Nearly half of Space Cargo's potential customers for its first Starfall mission are in the life sciences and biotechnology sectors, which rely on the microgravity environment of space for research and production involving higher purities impossible to attain on Earth.
