The first international flight has taken off from Western Sydney International Airport, with Air New Zealand flight NZ166 departing for Auckland shortly after 9am on Monday, October 26, 2026. The departure came after the airline's NZ165 service from Auckland landed at the airport at 7.27am, 18 minutes ahead of schedule.
The milestone marks the opening of Australia's first new major airport in more than five decades, following more than four decades of planning. The airport began domestic passenger operations on Sunday, October 25, with a Jetstar flight to the Gold Coast, and commenced cargo operations in July.
"Through our 24-hour operations, Western Sydney International Airport gives airlines greater flexibility to connect into global hubs and travellers more choice in how they reach the world," said airport chief executive Simon Hickey.
A New Era for Sydney Aviation
The new airport, located 45 kilometres from Sydney's central business district in Badgerys Creek, operates 24 hours a day, unlike the existing Kingsford Smith Airport, which is subject to a strict curfew from 11pm to 6am. The single-runway facility has an initial capacity of approximately 10 million passengers annually, with long-term plans to expand to 82 million by the 2060s.
"We've been in the final sprint of the marathon, so the legs are feeling a bit wobbly, but we're really happy that we're here," Hickey said. "This is a massive milestone; this is a generational change to aviation."
International Routes on the Horizon
The Air New Zealand service will operate three times weekly between Auckland and Western Sydney. Singapore Airlines will begin daily non-stop flights from November 23, 2026, with a late-night departure scheduled for 23:55 local time to utilise the airport's overnight operating window. Vietjet Air will launch flights to Ho Chi Minh City in January 2027, Fiji Airways will connect Nadi in March 2027, and Qatar Airways will begin services to Doha in December 2027.
What's Next?
The airport's domestic network is also expanding, with Jetstar operating flights to Melbourne and Brisbane alongside the Gold Coast route. Qantas plans to begin passenger services from March 2027.
Here is the question The Silicon Review raises. Western Sydney International Airport has finally opened its runways to international traffic, offering a curfew-free alternative to Kingsford Smith. When a new airport opens with a single runway and just one international carrier, does it represent a genuine second gateway for Sydney or simply a cargo hub with a passenger terminal attached?
