How Is AI Changing the Way You...AI is changing the way you buy a health plan online by automating digital purchases, speeding up approvals and changing how claims are checked and paid.
Software can now do tasks that used to take days of paperwork in minutes. That includes reading medical reports, matching hospital bills to policy terms and spotting errors.
People still decide the difficult cases. For most buyers, though, AI means fewer forms, quicker answers and less waiting at the hospital desk.
Buying looks simple on your screen. Behind it, AI is doing much of the sorting and checking.
That's why buying a health insurance policy online now takes minutes. A quick process still doesn't replace reading the policy wording before you pay.
Underwriting is how an insurer decides whether to cover you and at what price. It used to be the slowest part of buying a policy.
AI tools now read your answers on the proposal form along with any medical reports you upload. They look at your age, existing conditions and lifestyle habits to judge your risk. Simple cases, like a young buyer with no health issues, can often be approved almost instantly.
If something needs a closer look, like a past surgery or diabetes, the system passes the case to a human underwriter or asks for a medical test.
This makes honest disclosure even more important. These systems can match your answers against your reports. If a mismatch turns up later, a claim may be questioned.
Claims are where most people feel the difference. IRDAI's Master Circular on health insurance (May 2024) sets two deadlines. Insurers must decide on a cashless request within one hour of getting it from the hospital and on final discharge within three hours. These deadlines are difficult to meet manually at scale, so many insurers use AI to assist:
AI is good at speed and at spotting patterns. It can't choose for you or know what your family needs.
A recommendation tool may push the plan with the lowest premium instead of the one with the right cover. Say you're comparing the best medical insurance for maternity. Check the waiting period, the limit on delivery costs and whether newborn care is included. These details matter a lot, and you'll find them in the policy wording, not the quick quote.
Data is the other concern. You're sharing health records online, so read the consent screens carefully. The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, gives you rights over how your personal data is used.
A few habits help the technology work for you.
AI has made it faster to buy a health plan online and quicker to get claims paid, mostly by taking over slow manual checks. Your protection still depends on you, though. Choose the right cover, tell the truth on the form and keep your papers in order.
