For their groundbreaking contributions to the development of optogenetics, Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel have been jointly awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Nobel Week begins on October 5, 2026, with an announcement honoring a discovery that has transformed how researchers examine and work with individual nerve cells using light.

Prior to optogenetics, researchers used sluggish and imprecise methods of studying the brain, such as medications or electrical stimulation. By providing previously unheard-of temporal and spatial control, optogenetics enables researchers to quickly establish causal links between particular brain pathways and actions.

Deisseroth, who is the D H Chen Professor and a professor in the schools of medicine and of engineering said “I couldn’t be happier because the trio that the committee picked spans the progression from the early algal explorations all the way to advanced neuroscience experiments, so this prize really captures the full journey of discovery.”

By creating a method to introduce light-sensitive microbial proteins called opsins into mammalian brain cells, Deisseroth established his dominance as a pioneer in the field of neuroscience and made it possible for light to regulate specific cells.

“Optogenetics…is for probing complex systems at the fundamental level of cells. Once you know the cells that are important in a symptom or in correcting a symptom, then you can design any method you like to target their activity.” Said Karl Deisseroth.

Peter Hegemann & Georg Nagel found that single-celled green algae have a light-sensitive algal protein called channelrhodopsin. They demonstrated that this protein opens an ion channel that produces an electrical impulse when exposed to blue light. And Karl Deisseroth a Stanford University bioengineer and psychotherapist. His team successfully integrated the channelrhodopsin gene into mammalian nerve cells, motivated by a goal to comprehend clinical depression and schizophrenia. By 2007, his lab had shown that it was possible to precisely regulate the physical activities of living mice by using fiber-optic wires to transmit light. The prize will be equally divided among them.

FAQs:

Q: What exactly is optogenetics?

A: It is a cutting-edge biological method that uses genetics and optics (light) to regulate the electrical activity of certain, targeted nerve cells in a living brain.

Q: What protein makes optogenetics possible?

A: Channelrhodopsin. Single-celled green algae naturally contain a special light-sensitive protein that, when exposed to blue light, opens an ion channel.

Q: Why is optogenetics preferred over older brain-mapping methods?

A: Older techniques that affected the entire brain, such as chemical medications or electrical shocks, were slow and ineffective. Optogenetics targets specific types of neurons and provides millisecond-precise temporal and spatial control.

Q: How is the Nobel prize money split between the laureates?

A: Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel split the 12 million Swedish kronor (about $1.2 million USD) total cash incentive evenly.

Q: When and where do the 2026 Nobel Prize winners actually receive their medals?

A: The official Nobel Prize ceremonies take place on December 10, 2026, in Stockholm, Sweden (and Oslo, Norway for the Peace Prize)
