Salesforce's M&A Spree Continues With a Reported $375M Deal for Defense Tech Startup Rune
The Silicon Review 31 October, 2026

Salesforce has agreed to acquire Rune Technologies; a two-year-old defense AI startup whose TyrOS software helps the US Army and Marine Corps forecast supply needs in disconnected battlefield environments, for a reported $375 million in cash and stock.

Salesforce is buying its way deeper into the Pentagon. The enterprise software giant has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Rune Technologies, a defense AI startup that builds logistics software for the US military, according to an announcement on October 29, 2026. The financial terms were not officially disclosed, but Resilience Media reported the deal is worth approximately $375 million in cash and stock, citing sources.

What Rune Does

Rune, founded in 2024 by former Anduril executives David Tuttle and Peter Goldsborough, makes an operating system called TyrOS. The software helps frontline military units forecast how much fuel, food, ammunition, and spare parts they will need, plan how to move them, and decide where to send them. Its key selling point is that it keeps working in DDIL environments denied, degraded, intermittent, or limited connectivity and syncs data once a link is restored. The US Army and Marine Corps already use the technology.

Why Salesforce Wants It

Rune will be folded into Missionforce, Salesforce's business unit serving national security and defense agencies. Salesforce says Missionforce is growing 80% year over year and counts all six branches of the US military as customers, including a 10-year Army contract with a $5.6 billion ceiling booked in January. Salesforce describes defense operations in three layers: enterprise systems at headquarters, strategic planning, and the "operational edge" where units in the field make decisions. Missionforce already covers the first two. Rune adds the third.

"Salesforce is doubling down on national security with our most significant acquisition in this space," said Kendall Collins, president and CEO of Missionforce and Government Cloud at Salesforce.

Rune had raised $30 million from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Point72 Ventures, and IQT, the CIA-backed venture firm. It was last valued at $127 million in a Series A led by Human Capital in 2025.

The Bigger Picture

The deal is part of a broader acquisition spree by Salesforce as it tries to convince investors that AI agents will grow its business rather than cannibalize traditional software. The company recently agreed to buy AI marketing software maker Braze for about $5.66 billion, signed a $3.6 billion deal for AI agent platform Fin, and bought Informatica for $8 billion last year. It also puts Salesforce in more direct competition with defense tech companies like Palantir and Anduril, as AI firms and big tech groups move closer to government and military work.

Here is the question The Silicon Review raises. Salesforce built its empire on customer relationship management for banks, retailers, and hospitals. Now it is buying its way into battlefield logistics. When a company whose core product is helping businesses understand their customers turns its attention to helping militaries understand their supply lines, does that represent diversification or a fundamental shift in what Salesforce is willing to do for a paycheck?
