Singapore Airlines has unveiled its next-generation long-haul cabin products, committing more than S$2 billion to redesign all four travel classes. The SIA cabin overhaul represents the carrier's most comprehensive cabin investment to date, covering 72 aircraft: 41 Airbus A350-900s to be retrofitted and 31 Boeing 777-9s on order. The first aircraft with the new cabins will enter service in the second half of 2027.

The investment includes S$1.1 billion previously earmarked for A350 refurbishment in 2024, funded from the airline's cash balance of S$9.1 billion as of end-June. Chief Commercial Officer Lee Lik Hsin said most of the spending goes to premium cabins because business and first-class seats cost far more per unit than economy seats, and the carrier has set no spending ceiling.

First Class Beds: The Largest Double Bed in Commercial Aviation

The centrepiece of the SIA cabin upgrade is a new First Class product that converts two centre seats into what the airline calls the largest double bed in commercial aviation. Measuring 80 inches long and 60 inches wide, the combined bed is enabled by a fully retractable divider between the seats. Each seat also converts into a fully flat bed measuring 80 inches long and 30 inches wide.

First Class will feature curved sliding doors for privacy, Poltrona Frau leather upholstery, a 32-inch 4K touchscreen, and smart cabin controls that remember passengers' preferred seat and lighting settings. The Boeing 777-9 will carry six First Class seats, while the A350-900ULR will feature four, marking the first time First Class appears on the ultra-long-range variant.

"We look closely at how our customers work, dine, relax, and rest while travelling, and what they value most," CEO Goh Choon Phong said at the launch event. "Their feedback was clear: greater comfort and privacy, intuitive functionality and spaces they can flexibly adapt to their needs."

Business Class Doors: A First for SIA

Business Class receives sliding privacy doors for the first time on the airline, alongside fully flat beds measuring 79 inches long and up to 24 inches wide. Selected centre seats can be configured as companion beds when dividers are lowered. The design was developed with BMW Group's Designworks unit, drawing on automotive cockpit ergonomics.

Does privacy hardware alone close the gap with Qatar's Qsuite, or does SIA need to rethink the entire business class service model?

David Flynn, editor-in-chief of Executive Traveller, offered a measured assessment: "Business class represent a solid and much-needed catch up to the competition, rather than a mighty leap ahead. It's hard to top Qatar's business class Qsuite, let alone the next-gen version coming in 2027, but in features and usability, Singapore Airlines looks to have Emirates and arguably Cathay beat here."

Premium Economy and Economy Refresh

The SIA cabin upgrade extends to Premium Economy and Economy, though these seats will only appear on the new Boeing 777-9 fleet, not the retrofitted A350s. Premium Economy pitch grows from 38 to 40 inches; with recline increasing to 9 inches. Economy seats feature improved knee and shin clearance, a four-way adjustable headrest, and up to 13-inch 4K touchscreens with Bluetooth headphone pairing.

Lee acknowledged that some customers may be disappointed that existing A350s will not receive the new economy products, but said the airline makes investment decisions per cabin within each aircraft type.

Certification Delays and Timeline

The unveiling arrives against persistent certification bottlenecks. While the new seats are certified for the 777-9, the aircraft itself has not received type certification, and the seats have not yet been certified on the A350. Lee said the A350 certification delay pushed introduction back by roughly half a year. Boeing's 777-9 programme has slipped repeatedly, with deliveries now expected in 2027 at the earliest.
