50 Innovative Companies to Watch 2021
The Silicon Review
“Our goals at the Beauty Academy are to expand, update, and improve our educational programs continually.”
The Beauty Academy is the number one ‘Hair Styling and Esthetics’ training organization in Ontario. Its curriculum and hands-on practical training are designed to meet and exceed today’s employers’ needs, make the learning process efficient, effective, and practical, and help students develop life-long educational resources, enabling them to meet the demands of a continually changing beauty Industry.
The Beauty Academy is located in Ottawa and London.
To highlight and further understand how The Beauty Academy stands for and seeks to explore in this segment, I sat down with Phil Weaver (founder), who serves as the company’s Art Director.
Below is an excerpt.
Q. Would you please brief us on how has teaching in the beauty industry transitioned over the years? According to you, what are the notable trends that shape the current beauty/cosmetic industry?
Traditional methods have been classroom theory and hands-on practice of techniques. While this is effective, the use of technology helps enhance the learning experience. With that said, we have built an application that provides an extensive library of industry-leading instructional videos. This complements the traditional training and provides reinforced instruction to enable refresh and review.
Besides, our teaching and learning environment includes hands-on practice, practice with models, and an extensive library of video training and demonstrations. New trends and market changes are addressed by working with beauty industry leaders to revise and update content used in the course instruction.
Notably, there has been an increasing trend to adopt environmentally friendly products and services.
Q. Teaching as a process requires numerous different skills, especially in today’s dynamic environment. How you ensure the teachers at The Beauty Academy are equipped with those skills? What is the process of selecting the best slot of teachers for the aspirants?
We focus on instructors that have extensive industry experience and work well in a team environment. Passion for learning is essential.
All instructors have extensive experience in their respective areas. Refresher courses are provided to address new trends, techniques, and new services offered in the industry.
Q. Given that The Beauty Academy is an award-winning company, what’s your secret to making it to the top? And how do you plan to lead from the front?
Innovation is an ongoing effort. To excel, you must continuously improve. We are improving the instructors, the content value, the learning effectiveness, and the depth of the programs provided.
Q. How do you measure success, and over what time frame? How are these metrics determined?
We track student performance monthly with both written and practical tests. The scoring is compared with other students. Aggregates for instructors are compared among instructors. This provides input to address areas to improve and enhance the programs.
Q.Where do you stand as a company in the current market landscape?
The Beauty Academy is ranked as the number one beauty academy in Ontario. This was achieved based on feedback from students, alumni, and salons. Our academies attract students from surrounding communities and provinces as our programs are highly sought after. Needless to say, we are market leaders in this region.
An Overview of our programs:
Our Medical Esthetics program is unique. We provide a comprehensive program that exceeds other programs offered in Ontario, as mentioned above. Most programs address the basics of IPL, laser, and electrolysis. We have an expanded program that includes the latest trends that the industry requires, microblading, micro-needling, and micro-dermabrasion.
Our Professional Hair Stylist program includes an option that addresses barbering. While most industry programs only address the basics for men’s cuts, our barbering program adds over 100 hours of barbering techniques, the latest trends, and men’s grooming for beards and shaves. We recently added facial wax training and facial massages as it is a natural service extension for the Hairstylist to perform within the salon.
Q.What new endeavors is your company currently undertaking?
We are working to increase quality and consistency across all programs and academy locations. New content is being developed to improve program value and the learning experience.
Q.How do you plan to transform your company into a future that is unfolding before you?
We have increased the available digital learning content and links to industry leaders in the salon industry. Quality, content, and exceptional results will help ensure students are premier performers that salons strive to hire.
Our goals at the Beauty Academy are to expand, update, and improve our educational programs continuously.
