In Conversation with the Key Executive

Why was the company set up? How did you select the vertical and decide to be a part of the global platform?
Care Innovations was started as a joint venture between Intel and GE and is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Intel. The healthcare landscape is constantly changing. Medical resources are stretched. People are living longer with chronic conditions. Seniors want to remain in their own homes as they age. Even as the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, we envision millions of people, living healthy connected lives. To fulfill this vision, we offer flexible solutions that connect people to their care teams and give them the confidence to live independently, wherever they call home.

Care Innovations’ vision and strategy for remote care management enables healthcare providers to offer clinically driven, fully integrated remote care management solutions to populations with chronic or acute conditions. Our vision is predicated on turning the enormous amounts of data that can be generated from patients at home into actionable insights that inform proactive care and can lead to greater health outcomes and lower costs. By harnessing the power of big data, our solutions enable better decisions by our customers, their clinicians, their patients and the communities that surround the patient.

How successful has your solution been? Share the experience.
We offer a broad range of services and technology across the healthcare landscape to deliver more care into the community and reduce acute care utilization. In collaboration with the governor of Mississippi, the University of Mississippi, and C-Spire, Care Innovations’ remote monitoring solutions are serving rural, underserved patients with diabetes and other conditions. The study of our program with UMMC yielded clinical results, including a 1.7% average A1C reduction (a key indicator of diabetes severity), zero hospitalizations, and a financial savings of over $3,300 per patient per year.

If you have to list five factors that have been/are the biggest asset to your organization, what would they be and why?
First, we have an organization made up of people who have a genuine interest in what we do. Second, we have a uniquely clinically-led team, which is crucial for getting what we do right. Third, our parent company, Intel, has amazing technological capabilities that we’re able to utilize. Fourth, we have strong partnerships across the industry, including fantastic relationships with peripheral companies, like iHealth. Fifth, we focus on the people we help with technology playing a supporting (rather than starring) role.

What do you feel are the reasons behind your consistent growth as an organization?
Our customers tell us our exceptional customer service, strong focus on customer workflow, and great technological infrastructure are what help us stand out in this industry. Most remote monitoring organizations focus on the technology – we focus on the people that use the technology.

Are there any trigger factors/events/individuals that have played key roles in shaping your organization’s road map?
Eric Dishman, a founding member of Intel’s Digital Health Group, helped develop our company as our chief healthcare strategist and director of health policy. Today, Eric is director of the Obama administration’s Precision Medicine Initiative (PMI) Cohort Program. He has an amazing and personal story of experiencing our healthcare system as a patient and is a champion for driving care into the home, where patients can live a happier, healthier life.

Do you have any new products ready to be/getting ready to be rolled out into the market?
Launching this fall, Health Harmony Home Sensing is the next evolution in our solution suite. Built on Care Innovations’ robust remote patient management platform, Health Harmony, and our award-winning smart sensor technology, QuietCare®, Home Sensing (smart sensors placed in patents’ homes) passively monitors changes and trends in patients’ and residents’ activities of daily living (ADLs) that may indicate changes in health. This is a crucial component to remote monitoring, helping to fill in the gaps of information that are not easily captured via direct communication with the patient. Home Sensing helps support 100% compliant, low touch, low cost care.

Where do you see you and your company a couple of years from now?
With the transition to value-based care, Care Innovations will provide the ubiquitous mechanism for ongoing engagement between healthcare organizations and their members/patients, wherever they call home, which will drive a fundamental shift in the relationship patients have with their healthcare providers.
