In Conversation with Gilles Herard, Capital Corp Merchant Banking Inc Managing Director

Q. What was the reason behind the genesis of Capital Corp Merchant Banking Inc and how successful was your first project roll on?

The group was already operating in Canada and we expanded our market into the USA. Our group is well-known for funding challenging projects; projects with great potential, but having weaknesses that made them extremely challenging to fund by traditional funding sources. So we decided to expand our company.

Q. What challenges did you face in your initial years?

The biggest challenge was working capital issues. But, fortunately, we were very successful in closing
deals early on which created a regular deal flow. This helped tremendously in meeting our financial obligations.

Q. What kind of responses have you received from your consumers over the years?

Our group never ever advertised over the years, and all of our clients are referrals, thus our assumption that we must be doing something right! And it is the flexibility with which we are able to operate that has been a boon to us and our clients over the years.

Q. How do you manage to serve the needs of a highly volatile market?

Markets all face some type of volatility – again, especially in the last 18 months - and in any given deal there are some core elements that must be taken into consideration: a good product, good market, good management with a good track record, and good timing to launch! Capital Corp never lost money for its investors in its 37 years of existence because we have always kept our ear to the ground, stayed focused on our core services, and delivered superior funding programs to our clients. We have always valued our clients’ feedback as well. All these elements combined have kept us relevant over the decades.

Q. How do you maintain your customers’ trust and loyalty?

We have kept the same motto over the years that were there when we started: Our word is our bond. Our clients know they can trust in that because we have continually delivered what they are looking for when they’ve come to us.

Q. How is your company contributing to the global IT platform?

We are able to make funding available to what can sometimes be more complext IT projects where there is none (ex: with traditional funding institutions, who are limited in scope, instruments, and risk thresholds). We are able to do “out of the box” thinking and apply it to funding structures, such as for IT and other industries at large.

Q. If you have to list five factors that have been/are the biggest asset to your organization, what would they be and why?

  • Diligence,
  • Respect and Courtesy,
  • Attention to details,
  • Listening carefully to what the clients are saying so we can show them that we understand, and
  • Creativity - being able to accomplish what more traditional funders are unable to do.

Q. Do you have any new products ready to be launched?

We do not necessarily have a “packaged” product: We taylor our funding to each and every project coming to us and according to each project’s unique features, which is how we maintain ourselves on top of the proverbial wave.

Q. Where do you see your company a couple of years from now?

People will always need someone who can think outside-the-box and deliver results, which is something we have particularly excelled at over the decades we’ve been in business. What remains is for us to stay focused on that, where many other companies in our industry ended up distracted or spread themselves thin and expired. Our sustainability is based on persistent consistency and we plan to keep it that way.
