Laser guns! We all love those cool laser guns in Mini militia or other shooting games. Although those weapons in an action fiction or shooting games are a far cry from reality, a company in China claims to have produced a ‘Laser AK-47’ that can burn targets in a fraction of seconds. It is about the size and weight of an ordinary rifle but can fire hundreds of shot, each of which is capable of causing instant carbonization of human skin. According to the source, the laser project is undertaking at the Xian Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics, at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

As the weapon is only described and not has been demonstrated yet, it brings all the speculations. The technology doesn’t sound compatible with the design. It seems highly questionable that how the laser gun is going to meet the power requirement. A low power laser gun can easily damage eyes as they are highly sensitive to radiation but that is not sufficient to do meaningful harm to a physical body, as that would require enormous heat. According to their claim, the gun is powered by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries; the same is used in the mobile phones but obviously a much powerful one. It is capable of a thousand 2-second shots that are about half an hour in total. Laser, unlike bullets, undergo scattering as they propagate, weakening its strength and can become powerless after a range.

Although the idea of a laser gun firing hundreds of skin-burning shots is astonishing, it doesn’t sound feasible. But let us wait for the real demonstration before assuming its failure.
