Amazon might enter the theatre arena

Amazon might enter the theatre arena
The Silicon Review
17 August, 2018

In what many would consider an unsurprising move, Amazon might have just entered a race in a bid to acquire Landmark Theatres. Founded in 1974, Landmark is one of the largest cinema chains in the U.S with 56 theaters, 268 screens in 27 markets. It is owned by 2929 Entertainment, which is owned by the business duo Mark Cuban and Todd Wagner and has not released additional details decision regarding the sale. This move is not so surprising, considering the fact that something like this just might fit into Amazon’s broader market strategy.

Amazon has made people’s lives more convenient by enabling them to purchase just about any daily necessity from the comfort of their homes. These include groceries, apparel, electronics, books, stationery, and digital products and services such as movies, music and cloud services. The e-commerce giant bought the American supermarket chain Whole Foods, in order to expand its presence in the retail sector. Moreover, it is also making headways into AI-powered checkout-free supermarkets.

However, Amazon can’t include in its portfolio the experiential side of retail, such as bars, pubs and movie theatres and so on. So, if the sale of Landmark Theatres goes Amazon’s way, it would mark the larger market strategy to be almost anywhere where consumers spend money. But, as of now, it remains to be seen if the Seattle based e-commerce titan will go forward with this purchase.
