Discovery and BBC to launch a streaming service for documentaries

Discovery and BBC to launch a streaming service for documentaries
The Silicon Review
02 April, 2019

The market for streaming content online is getting more interesting with each passing month. Various media giants, as well as software behemoths, have announced streaming services for television content and video games respectively. Not wanting to be left behind in this race, Discovery and BBC have now announced a partnership for a streaming service that will exclusively feature documentaries and factual programmes. Popular movies and TV shows are one thing, but documentaries about natural sciences, history as well as scientific TV shows are massively popular and it should come as no surprise that two of the biggest names in the media industry to have dominated that genre have decided to enter the streaming services market.

The service is set to be launched in 2020 and is expected to cost $5 per month and would be available in all countries where Discovery and BBC operate. The new service will feature some of the most spectacular nature documentaries like Planet Earth, Blue Planet, Life, etc. which have received universal acclaim and won numerous awards. These will be combined with Discovery’s existing lineup. Furthermore, both BBC and Discovery would join forces to launch their very own wildlife series in addition to travel and living shows, history shows, and so on.

Executives from both agencies agree that educational shows such as those to be available are now more important than ever, given the rapidly deteriorating climate of our planet.
