Microsoft recently made an announcement regarding new additions to its SQL Server and Windows family at the CEATAC event in Japan. The new additions will support Edge Computing and IoT use cases. The portfolio helps Microsoft to realize its intelligent edge and Intelligent Cloud visions. A unique flavor of OS was announced for the IoT family by Windows furthermore;, a partnership with Netherland-based Semiconductor Company called NXP was announced in the event. A newer version of SQL Server was exclusively designed for the edge, and the company is now focused on building a set of container images to accelerate ML interference in the edge.
Windows 10 IoT Core will be the company’s first device-specific operating system, and it is well optimized for smaller devices. The new core can be installed on well-known single board computers like MinnowBoard, Raspberry Pi, DragonBoard 410c, and NXP devices. The developers can make use of Python, C, .NET Core environments to develop IoT applications. Microsoft has also invested in Windows Server IoT 2019 and Windows 10 IoT enterprise; this was done to target software vendors and independent device vendors who build IoT products for industries. Windows Server IoT 2019 will allow the users to develop and manage tools similar to the general-purpose servers that run Windows Server.
