Ghost Particles’ Discove...Scientists have discovered new “ghost particles” coming from inside the Earth. The particles known as ‘geoneutrinos’ rarely interact with matter and can be impossible to detect. However, scientists working in the biggest underground laboratory have found 53 instances of the occurrence which is double as many recorded earlier.
The ‘geoneutrinos’ were detected using the Borexino detector that is buried 1,400 meters under and is capable of reading very sensitive measurements of normally undetected phenomena. Scientists are hoping that this new discovery could help shed more light on the processes that happen below our feet but remain unknown and mysterious. Geoneutrinos are produced when radioactive decay happens under the Earth’s surface.
The Borexino detector is located at the underground Laboratori Nazionali Del Gran Sasso in Italy and it aims to see the invisible flow of these ghost particles. The Scientists there have been collecting data and watching for Neutrinos since 2007.
"Geoneutrinos are the only direct traces of the radioactive decays that occur inside the Earth, and which produce an as yet unknown portion of the energy driving all the dynamics of our planet," said Livia Ludhova, one of the two current scientific coordinators of Borexino.
These new discoveries can help explain the mysterious processes that help create the unexplained heat that comes from the Earth’s centre. China is currently building a detector called Juno that will be 70 times bigger than Borexino and will be capable of more precise readings and measurements.
