The US must now come up with stringent PV policies to make solar module disposing green
The Silicon Review
04 December, 2020

The global solar industry cannot call itself a clean energy source if it cannot dispose of hazardous waste. In the US alone, tons of toxics and millions of solar modules are expected to reach landfill in a few years. Recycle PV Solar is the only manufacturer that has developed recycling capabilities specifically designed to process the company’s thin-film panels. In 2020, Climate change concerns and market-leading pricing together propelled the growth of the US solar industry. Right now, the growth of the industry has slowed down a bit due to the ongoing Covid 19 pandemic and the financial burden created during the Trump era.

Residential solar markets and utility-scale are continuously booming, and the number of solar modules that were deployed is staggering. One of the biggest downsides in solar adoption is that solar panels are known for having finite lifespans, and it is very expensive and difficult to recycle them. The US is lagging behind Europe in policy progress and recycling programs, and it is estimated that the majority of the solar panels will now end up in landfills. In many instances, the aluminum frames and the cables are removed while the modules are sent to landfills, which are not green.
