Microsoft has purchased Activision to boost its efforts against metaverse
The Silicon Review
19 January, 2022

The ambitions of Microsoft became quite clear when the company made an announcement regarding the acquisition of Activision Blizzard for a whopping $68.7 billion

By becoming dominant in the desktop platform, Microsoft had missed several opportunities in the mobile computing segment to the rivals Google and Apple. The tech giant is all set to take over one of the biggest emerging computing platforms – the metaverse. Recently, the company’s CEO Satya Nadella had stated that metaverse is going to be the next big thing for his company. Metaverse is basically a virtual world where people can interact with their friends, families, and colleagues in the form of digital avatars. The ambitions of Microsoft became quite clear when the company made an announcement regarding the acquisition of Activision Blizzard for a whopping $68.7 billion.

We must note here that the tech giant already owns Minecraft, a popular sandbox-style game that Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, feels is the blueprint for the metaverse. The latest deal will boost the company’s effort against Mark Zuckerberg’s metaverse. No matter what the focus is on for meta, it has to eventually have its roots in gaming. This is mainly due to the fact that gamers understand the potential of virtual avatars and will show massive interest in virtual gifts and skins, which will play a major role in the digital economy.
