Italian Alps Glacier collapsed...Part of a mountain glacier in the Italian Alps collapsed due to the rising temperature, killing more than six people and injuring eight.
On Sunday, 3rd of July, 2022, a large avalanche occurred on the Marmolada. It is the highest mountain in the Dolomites, a range in the eastern Italian Alps straddling in the region of Veneto and Trento. The Trento provincial government said that the rescue operations were in progress. Injured people were taken to hospitals in the nearby towns of Treviso, Belluno, Bolzano, and Trento, said Luca Zaia, the president of Veneto.
This collapsed glacier injured and killed hikers. The Alpine rescue unit said that a massive mass of ice collapsed near Punta Rocca, close to the route usually taken by climbers and hikers to reach the Alps summit. A spokesperson said, "Fortunately, the weather conditions are good, but the danger is that there could further collapse."
The President of Veneto said that the early summer temperature in Italy rose and touched ten degrees Celsius in Marmolada on Saturday. Rising temperature due to global warming is the critical cause of the collapsing and shrinking of many glaciers worldwide over recent decades.
