About a month ago, the unvaccinated young adult began experiencing weakness and paralysis, and he was hospitalized. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have confirmed the infection. According to state health officials, healthcare providers should look for additional polio cases. It is believed that the chain of infection that resulted in the New York case originated outside the U.S.
According to the CDC, no case of Polio has originated in the U.S. since 1979. The last known case in the country was in 2013. Since 1990, the case of Rockland County is the first confirmed polio infection in New York.
The polio stain in the infected individual’s body is known as revertant Sabin type 2 virus. According to the state health department, the chain of infection began with someone who took the oral polio vaccine. The oral polio vaccine contains a mild virus strain that can replicate. People who receive it can spread the virus to others. The U.S. uses inactivated poliovirus for the vaccine, and oral polio vaccine is no longer administered in the country. This suggests that the chain of transmission began abroad.
