Monkeypox jumped to 20% over 92 countries, says WHO

Monkeypox jumped to 20% over 92 countries

According to World Health Organization, Monkeypox infection increased nearly 7,500 to more than 35,000 cases across 92 countries worldwide.

According to WHO data, nearly all reported infection cases are in the Americas and Europe. Twelve deaths have been reported so far. The plurality of patients continues to be men who have sex with men. The global supply of the monkeypox vaccine, Jynneos in the U.S., remains limited. Data on its significance in the current outbreak is sparse, said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus Tedros. Danish biotech company Bavarian Nordic manufactures Jynneos.

The monkeypox vaccine can be allocated after exposure to reduce the risk of serious disease or before exposure to lessen the risk of infection. According to the WHO's monkeypox technical lead, Dr. Rosamund Lewis, data on the effectiveness of the vaccine is limited. There are reports of breakthrough cases where people who received the shots after exposure to the virus still fall ill and become infected after receiving the vaccine as a preventative measure.

Lewis said that WHO has also observed some mutations in the monkeypox virus. However, it's not yet clear how it impacts the human immune response and what these changes mean for the pathogen's behavior.
