Twitter under investigation after a whistleblower alleges security issues

CNIL, the French data protection watchdog, is also investigating the complaint against Twitter

After a whistleblower complained about its security measures, Twitter is facing investigation by European regulators over privacy, data protection, and privacy issues. Authorities in Ireland and France confirmed to TechCrunch that they were following up on the complaint by Peiter" Mudge" Zatko, who raised allegations that the company misled regulatory bodies concerning its compliance with local laws. He alleged that Twitter violated the terms of a settlement with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission by claiming it had a well laid out security plan.

"We became aware of the issues when we read the media stories [yesterday] and have engaged with Twitter on the matter," the news outlet told Graham Doyle, the deputy commissioner for Ireland's General Data Protection Regulation. The CNIL, the French data protection watchdog, is also investigating the complaint. One of Zatko's allegations said that Twitter misconstrued an update to the platform late last year to comply with the orders from the CNIL, Politico reported.
