CDC clears reformulated COVID ...CDC cleared reformulated Covid shots that target the omicron subvariants for the fall, making it viable for many people to get an additional booster within days.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s independent vaccine committee voted 13 to 1 earlier in favor of the booster after examining the available effectiveness and safety data over an almost seven-hour meeting. The Director, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, signed off on the shots clearing the way for pharmacies to start administering the shots a few hours later.
OKed, Pfizer’s omicron boosters were for people ages 12 and older, and updated shots of Moderna were authorized for people ages 18 and above. The eligible age groups can acquire the boosters at least two months after taking their vaccine series or their most current booster with the old shots.
Public health officials expect another wave of Covid this fall, as immunity from the old vaccines sags off, more infectious omicron subvariants circulated, and people spend more time indoors as the climate turns colder and relatives gather for the holidays. The FDA and CDC hope the new boosters will provide more durable protection against mild illness, infection, and severe disease.
