Florida warned to brace for major disaster due to Hurricane Ian

Florida Hurricane Ian

As Hurricane Ian of category two gathers force in the Caribbean the governor of Florida has warned the state to brace for a major disaster.

On Monday night strong winds began hitting the southern coast of Cuba. Hurricane Ian is expected to make landfall on the west coast of Florida sometime on Wednesday. Though the exact path of the hurricane is uncertain Governor Ron DeSantis warned of "broad impacts throughout the state". Residents around the state have been stocking up on water, food, fuel, and medicine. Some parts of the area have not seen a hurricane of this magnitude in about a century.

As the hurricane is inching north from its current location 130 west of Cuba, the National Hurricane Center is expecting "rapid strengthening" from Ian over the next 48 hours. The governor of Florida has declared a state of emergency for the weekend and to assist with relief efforts, he activated 5,000 National Guard troops.

On Monday, a bulletin issued by the NHC at 2200e said that Ian could develop into a storm of category three with wind speeds of 120mph or greater by the time it hits Cuba. In parts of the island, Tuesday classes have been canceled. Evacuations are carried out in a handful of western provinces, including near the tobacco region of the country.
