In England, the NHS app hit 30 million download

NHS app

In England the NHS app has been downloaded 30 million times; many people are using it to spell out their preferences on organ donation.

In 2018 the app for NHS England patients was first piloted. This app can be used to make order prescriptions, download NHS Covid passes for international travel, GP appointments, and many other things.

According to NHS, between September 2021 and August 2022, 448,000 people used the app to make organ-donation decisions. In the previous 12 months, the app had 265,000 people registering their decisions.  Hence, the new figure is 69% more than the previous one. Now, the number of times the app is downloaded is equivalent to more than half the population of England.

More than 6,500 people across the UK are waiting for a transplant. In May 2020, the laws surrounding organ donation were altered, in England. It was done to presume adults' consent unless they specifically record a decision to the contrary. This "opt-out" system was introduced in Scotland in March 2020 and Wales in 2015. But the families still retain the ability to refuse organ donation. And according to the NHS, between September 2021 and August 2022, 605 people prevented their dead loved ones from donating organs.
