Royal Caribean to partner with...Cruise giant Royal Caribbean says it will tie up with Elon Musk's rocket company SpaceX, using its Starlink system to offer speedier internet at sea.
Guests of the cruise ship pay for internet, but the connection has historically been poor. Jason Liberty, the chief executive of Royal Caribean, said that the new partnership would enable high-bandwidth activities like video streaming. Starlink draws on its extensive network of satellites that orbit the Earth.
Mr. Liberty said that the installation of Starlink on Royal Caribbean ships will start immediately and be completed by March 2023. He added that this partnership would mark the most significant public deployment of high-speed internet of Starlink in the travel industry so far.
Starlink is run by SpaceX and designed to provide high-speed internet to people who live in remote areas. It relies on thousands of its satellites placed in a low-level orbit around the Earth, making the connection faster between the satellites and the ground. Elon Musk also made Starlink available in Ukraine earlier this year when Russian forces invaded the country and closed down internet services, and tried to block social media. Ukrainians used the Starlink network to communicate on the battlefield.
