For tax evasion Colombian star Shakira to stand trial in Spain

For allegations of tax fraud amounting to €14.5m Colombian music star Shakira will stand trial in a Spanish court.

Although a date has not yet been set, a Barcelona court has ordered Shakira to stand trial for six alleged tax crimes. If the superstar is found guilty Spanish prosecutors want to fine her €23.8m and jail her for eight years.

The 45-year-old music star has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing. In a recent interview with the Spanish edition of Elle magazine, Shakira said that she is confident that justice will prevail in her favor and she had enough proof to support the case. In a statement music start’s legal team also said that they would do their best by presenting the appropriate argument on time

The center of this trial is the residency status of Shakira between 2012 and 2014. The prosecutors alleged that during that period she was living in Spain but she listed her official residence elsewhere. People who spend more than six months in Spain are considered residents for tax purposes, under the country’s law. But according to Shakira Spain was not where she was mainly living at the time.
