The US approved $2.6 billion in aid for Ukraine and its allies

The US has sanctioned nearly $2.7bn in new assistance to Ukraine and its allies, including $675m in weapons for Ukraine as it battles Russia.

At a meeting with dozens of fellow ministers, Lloyd Austin, the Defense Secretary, announced the arms package at the US air base in Ramstein, Germany. The aid includes Humvee vehicles, munitions, howitzers, anti-tank systems, and armored ambulances. The United States has already pledged approximately $13bn in military assistance for Ukraine.

On Thursday, the Biden administration said it had earmarked $2bn in long-term assistance. It is done in the form of investments to bolster the security of Ukraine and 18 of its neighbors. It includes both Nato members and non-members at risk of future Russian aggression.

Anthony Blinken, the US Secretary of State, arrived in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv. His colleague urged the country's allies to commit to support as long as necessary and be prepared to adapt to the type of support offered. President Biden wants to end America's "forever wars," but he is sanctioning billions of dollars into one that could crush on for a long time. Secretary of State Antony Blinken's visit to Kyiv was organized to underline that message by stressing the Americans are determined to see this through.
