Users of the Meta-owned platform began reporting issues just before 08:00 BST on Tuesday. According to the service status website Down Detector, more than 12,000 users' reports were posted within half an hour. Many people across social media complained that they cannot receive or send messages.

Globally, WhatsApp has approximately two billion active users. This app is one of the most popular messaging platforms in the world. Many users who tried to use the app this morning faced a "connecting" message.

A spokesperson for Meta said that they were aware that some people are having trouble sending messages. He added that they were working to restore WhatsApp for everyone as quickly as possible. But, the outage among the people was likely to cause significant disruption.
