WHO planning to switch to one ...WHO expects that this change in strategy will make the doses available to more countries
The World Health Organization has decided to temporarily suspend the standard two-dose vaccination regimen for cholera, and replace it with a single dose due to the rising outbreaks and vaccine shortages worldwide. The organisation which is a U.N. Agency said, “The exceptional decision reflects the grave state of the cholera vaccine stockpile” at a time when countries like Syria, Malawi and Haiti are fighting large outbreaks of cholera, which spreads through contact with contaminated food and water.
WHO expects that this change in strategy will make the doses available to more countries. The WHO's emergencies director Mike Ryan told reporters in a briefed reporters about the change in strategy and said that it was a sign of the "scale of the crisis" caused by a lack of focus on safe sanitation and immunization for all at risk. The one-dose strategy had proved to be effective as a response to cholera outbreaks. Cholera often causes no or mild symptoms, but a serious cause can cause acute diarrhea and also result in death if left untreated. In places of conflict and poverty ,cholera cases have surged this year.
