No glaciers in Kilimanjaro by ...The UN said in a report that due to climate change, Glaciers across the globe - including Kilimanjaro, the last glacier in Africa, will be unavoidably lost by 2050.
A UNESCO report found that within three decades one-third of glaciers located in UN World Heritage sites will melt. The last glaciers of Mount Kilimanjaro will vanish as well as the glaciers in Yosemite National Park and the Alps in the US. According to the author, these glaciers will melt regardless of the actions of the world to combat climatic changes. The report was projected based on satellite data. This report comes as the leaders of the world prepare to meet in Egypt for the COP27 climate change conference, next week.
Across 50 UN World Heritage sites, about 18,600 glaciers have been identified. They represent approximately 10% of the glaciers' area of the Earth and include places sacred to local populations and renowned tourist spots.
The author of the report said that the remaining two-thirds of glaciers could be saved, but only if the world limits global warming to 1.5C. But last week another UN report found that the world currently had "no credible pathway" to achieve that.
