With the discovery of popcorn ...The US Department of Justice revealed that it seized $3.36bn of Bitcoin which was stolen by James Zhong from an infamous darknet website.
In the hacker’s home, the stash of 50,676 Bitcoin was found hidden on various devices such as an under-floor safe and also inside the popcorn tin. Zhong pleaded guilty to hacking the fund from the illegal Silk Road marketplace in 2012. According to the US authorities, this was the second-largest seizure in history.
The police raid at Mr. Zhong's home in Georgia was carried out a year ago but could only reveal now. The Bitcoin was stolen when its value peaked, but now the seized funds would be worth around $1.1 billion. According to the officials, the Bitcoin was dotted around his house on hard drives and other storage such as an under-floor safe and a tiny computer hidden inside a popcorn tin in a bathroom closet.
On 4th November James Zhong pleaded guilty to hacking the website and forfeited his assets and Bitcoin to police as he awaits sentencing. He faced up to 20 years of imprisonment sentence.
