Scientists achieve a key milestone by creating abundant zero-carbon power through nuclear fusion.

The Department of Energy is set to announce that scientists have created a fusion reaction for the first time, resulting in a net energy gain. This is considered a major milestone in the decades-long, multibillion-dollar quest to develop a technology that provides unlimited, cheap, green, and clean power.

The science of nuclear fusion is based on pressing hydrogen atoms so close to each other that they combine into helium—and then release torrents of energy. Scientists utilized the government-funded project and worked at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. "To most of us, this was only a matter of time," one of the lab’s senior fusion scientists said of the successful experiment.

The primary aim of fusion research is to replicate the nuclear reaction through which energy is created on the sun. It is considered the "holy grail" of carbon-free power that scientists have been working on since the 1950s. Though it is at least a decade—maybe decades—away from commercial use, the latest development is likely to be touted by the Biden administration as an affirmation of a massive investment by the government over the years.
