The César Film Awards prohibit nominees who have been investigated for sexual violence

César Film Awards

The French Oscar have said that anyone who could go to jail for sexual assault will not be able to attend their 2023 ceremony.

The César Film Awards, which are coming next month, said they were doing this out of respect for anyone who might have been hurt. It means that French actor Sofiane Bennacer, who is under investigation for alleged rape, which he denies, will be excluded from the ceremony. There was a fear that there would be protests if Mr. Bennacer attended.

It follows a backlash in 2020, when Roman Polanski, who was wanted in the United States for statutory rape, won the award for best director. In November, the group, César Academy that gives out the award took Mr. Bennacer’s name off the list of nominees and said it was thinking about changing the rules for who can be nominated.

Now, it has been said that people who are being investigated for violent crimes that could lead to jail time, especially sexual crimes, will not be able to go to the ceremony on February 25. The rule also applies to those who have been convicted of committing the specified offence. The Academy will vote on whether to permanently alter eligibility requirements.
