The UN claims that human efforts to preserve the ozone layer have been successful and that it may recover in matter of decades.

The big study notes that an international agreement to stop using toxic chemicals that were harming the environment in1987 has been successful. In 1970s, the ozone layer’s depletion was attributed to chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which were frequently found in spray cans, refrigerators, foam insulation and air conditioners.

Scientist first noticed a huge hole in the layer in 1985. Two years later, the Montreal Protocol was ratified by 46 nations, which pledged to gradually phase out the dangerous substances. Nearly 99% of the compounds that were once prohibited for ozone depletion heave since been phased out, and the agreement later became the first UN convention to get universal acceptance. The Antarctic ozone hole didn’t stop growing until the 2000, when its size and depth steadily started to increase.

The Montreal Protocol is currently working as intended, according to a report produced by UN, US, and EU organizations. It claims that the ozone layer will return to its level from 1980, if the current measures are upheld.
