Tesla Superchargers will be ma...This collaboration with Tesla is a vital next step in rapidly expanding GM customers' access to fast chargers.
Ford isn't the only electric vehicle manufacturer converting to Tesla's North American Charging Standard; General Motors has also announced the switch. CEO Mary Barra confirmed the change during a Twitter Spaces chat with Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Thursday, adding that the NACS open-source connector will be standard in all GM EVs by 2025.
As part of the agreement, all GM electric vehicles will have access to 12,000 Tesla Superchargers by 2024. Existing GM EV drivers will not need to modify their vehicles in order to use Tesla's chargers, but they will need to use an adaptor to make their vehicles compatible. Similarly, GM claims it would create an adapter that will allow future NACS-enabled EVs to charge at its existing CSS-capable fast charging network.
That backwards-compatible charger could be useful. Tesla's desire to open up its charging system to non-Tesla vehicles was revealed alongside a $7.5 billion Biden administration drive to boost EV charger availability in the US, however that plan is largely focused on CCS chargers. This collaboration is a critical component of the strategy and a vital next step in rapidly expanding GM customers' access to fast chargers.
