Microsoft has finally pulled t...In case you haven't heard, Microsoft is making a big push into artificial intelligence.
Microsoft said today on its support page that it is finally turning off Cortana, at least on Windows. Later this year, support for the standalone Cortana software, which you probably aren't even aware is installed on your PC, will end. The news was released shortly after Microsoft's Build 2023 conference, where Windows Copilot was first shown off. Microsoft mentions Windows Copilot specifically in the support article announcing the end of the Cortana era and says that Windows 11 will still allow you to take advantage of AI capabilities.
Also available are Bing, Microsoft 365 Copilot, and Windows Voice Access, the latter of which enables speech control of your PC. For Cortana, the writing has been on the wall for a while. In order to compete with Apple's Siri, it was first presented as a virtual assistant for Windows Phone 8.1 back in 2014. Cortana is still available in Teams rooms, Teams displays, Teams mobile, Outlook mobile, and Teams rooms, according to Microsoft. However, it's definitely not the best time to design a workflow around it if you haven't used it on those apps before. The age of Bing Chat and Copilot has arrived. In case you haven't heard, Microsoft is making a big push into artificial intelligence.
