Bluesky adds a likes tab and an emoji picker in its latest update

Tab emoji
The Silicon Review
28 August, 2023

Bluesky was founded by a group of ex-Twitter employees.

Social media platform Bluesky has updated its mobile apps and website to include a separate "likes" tab on users’ profiles, an emoji picker for web composing and the ability to suggest people to mention when typing an "@." Notifications have also been added to the platform’s mobile apps. Unlike rival Threads, users cannot see other people’s liked posts, though the functionality can be added by third-parties using Bluesky’s API. The updates follow Bluesky’s addition of rate limits to actions such as resetting passwords or updating user handles earlier in the week. These were introduced after the platform struggled to cope with traffic following Elon Musk’s announcement that X (formerly Twitter) would be removing its "block" feature.

Bluesky’s updates come amid growing competition in the social media space, with platforms like Clubhouse and Twitter’s Spaces offering new audio-based features. Bluesky was founded by a group of ex-Twitter employees. It has a mission to develop a decentralized social media protocol that would enable users to own their own data. The platform has not yet launched publicly, but is reportedly working on a blockchain-based system that would allow for greater user control over their data and content. With its latest updates, Bluesky is seeking to provide users with more features and functionality, and to establish itself as a viable alternative to more established social media platforms.
