US offshore wind project is now delivering around 68MW of power to the grid

The initial five turbines at the Vineyard Wind project, a collaboration between Avangrid and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), have commenced operation. These turbines, each boasting 13 MW GE Haliade-X models, are now contributing approximately 68 MW to the New England grid. Notably, the project previously achieved a milestone by supplying around 5 MW of power to the US in early January, albeit intermittently. Currently, the project has successfully installed nine turbines, with the tenth in the process of installation and preparations underway for the transportation of the 11th turbine to the offshore project site. The additional turbines will gradually add more power to the grid, with each turbine commencing production upon completion of the commissioning process.

The generated power from the project connects to the New England grid in Barnstable, facilitated by underground cables that link to a substation further inland on Cape Cod. Upon completion, the project will encompass a total of 62 wind turbines. Reflecting on this achievement, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey remarked, "This signifies a significant milestone in the transition to clean energy. Following years of advocacy, research, policymaking, and construction, America's offshore wind industry has evolved from aspiration to reality." Governor Healey expressed gratitude to the Legislature, state and local officials, and union workers for their contributions to developing the offshore wind sector, highlighting the benefits of clean, affordable energy for homes and businesses across Massachusetts. This advancement is expected to improve air quality, reduce emissions, and promote progress toward achieving net-zero emissions goals.
