AI center will be integrated into the NSA's existing Cybersecurity Collaboration Center,

The United States National Security Agency (NSA) has revealed the establishment of an artificial intelligence security center tasked with supervising the development and integration of AI capabilities within US defense and intelligence services. General Paul Nakasone, Director of the NSA and US Cyber Command emphasized the increasing significance of AI in national security and announced the opening of the new center as part of efforts to shape the future of AI technology in the security, defense, and intelligence sectors. He underscored the need to acknowledge and safeguard the current advantage the US holds in AI. While acknowledging the utility of AI in threat analysis, Nakasone emphasized that human decision-making remains paramount. He stated that although AI aids intelligence and defense agencies, final decisions are made by humans, ensuring human oversight in AI applications.

Regarding election security, Nakasone noted that the NSA had not yet detected attempts by Russia or China to influence the 2024 US presidential elections. However, he highlighted ongoing efforts to collaborate with partners and allies to deter potential manipulation in elections worldwide. The establishment of the AI security center follows an NSA study highlighting securing AI models as a key national security challenge, especially with the emergence of generative AI technologies. Concerns about Chinese cyber operations targeting US and allied institutions have also prompted heightened vigilance, with the US and Japan issuing an alert about Chinese hackers targeting government, industrial, and telecommunications entities supporting their militaries.
