Gannett, McClatchy news chains announced a stop to using Associated Press content

Gannett McClatchy Associated Press content

While the decision may represent a significant cost-saving measure, it poses a potential disservice to news consumers

Gannett, the publisher of USA Today and numerous local newspapers, is set to discontinue its utilization of the Associated Press' content, a move that will take effect starting next week. This decision deals a significant blow to the not-for-profit wire service collective, which heavily relies on memberships for revenue. According to an internal memo from Gannett's chief content officer, Kristin Roberts, obtained by TheWrap, the company will cease the use of AP dispatches, photos, and video as of March 25. Roberts stated that Gannett generates more journalism than the AP on a daily basis and believes that redirecting funds from AP content will enable them to enhance their teams and address any existing gaps.

Following Gannett's announcement, McClatchy, another major news chain, also indicated its intention to drop the AP service. Both Gannett and McClatchy have been grappling with financial challenges for several years, with workforce reductions and financial losses plaguing the companies. The termination of these partnerships underscores the evolving landscape of the news industry and the ongoing challenges faced by traditional media outlets. As for AP, while fees from U.S. newspapers once constituted a substantial portion of its revenue, the organization has diversified its services in recent years, reducing its reliance on newspaper fees. Despite the setback, AP continues to innovate and expand its offerings to adapt to changing media consumption habits.
