NIST announced the launch comp...The solicitation process for the Manufacturing USA institute will be conducted in two stages
The U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) intends to launch an open competition for a novel Manufacturing USA institute with a specific focus on leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to bolster the resilience of U.S. manufacturing. NIST foresees an allocation of $70 million in federal funds over a five-year period for this initiative, matched or surpassed by contributions from private and other nonfederal funding sources. To facilitate meaningful collaborations among industry, academia, federal laboratories, and state and local government agencies, NIST has published a Notice of Intent (NOI) in the Federal Register. This move provides interested parties with ample time to establish partnerships. Further details on the NOI are accessible on the NIST website.
The AI institute will join the national Manufacturing USA network, which focuses on addressing advanced manufacturing challenges through collaboration between public and private entities. It will undertake research and development projects, foster sector-specific partnerships, and develop training resources to cultivate a skilled workforce aligned with industry needs. NIST anticipates that the institute will deliver measurable outcomes supporting manufacturing resilience, including the acceleration of technology adoption, predictive maintenance, process optimization, and risk mitigation from supply chain disruptions. NOI is distinct from planned solicitations for other initiatives such as the CHIPS Manufacturing USA Digital Twin Institute and the U.S. AI Safety Institute (AISI). Interested parties are advised to monitor relevant websites for updates on those initiatives.
