Screen Ireland expanded National Talent Academy Network for VFX training

This initiative aims to cultivate a diverse and skilled talent pool across Ireland's screen industry

Screen Ireland recently unveiled plans to expand the National Talent Academy Network, with the Cultural and Creative Industries Skillnet (CCIS) chosen to spearhead the establishment of the new National Talent Academy for VFX. Colman Farrell, head of skills and professional development at Screen Ireland, expressed enthusiasm for the launch of the National Talent Academy for VFX, which complements existing academies focusing on live-action and animation. The academy intends to address the evolving skill requirements of the VFX sector and foster inclusivity by welcoming individuals from diverse backgrounds. Gareth Lee, manager at CCIS, welcomed the opportunity to lead the establishment of the National Talent Academy for VFX, highlighting the sector's steady growth and potential for further expansion.

The new academy aims to tackle ongoing skill gaps in the VFX industry by offering inclusive access for newcomers and advancement opportunities for existing professionals. CCIS will engage with stakeholders nationwide to form a steering group comprising representatives from different regions, community groups, industry bodies, and diverse entities. Over the past 15 years, Irish post-production and VFX have emerged as key players in international productions, boasting a highly skilled local talent pool. Irish VFX work has garnered recognition on the global stage, with nominations for prestigious awards such as BAFTAs, Emmys, and Visual Effects Society Awards. Recent projects include notable films and television series like Marvel Studios’ WandaVision and Spiderman: No Way Home, Netflix’s The Irishman, and HBO’s Game of Thrones.
