Johnson Unveils Velys Spine Robotics
The Silicon Review
06 August, 2024

The Velys Spine platform is designed to support spinal fusion operations across various spine regions, including the cervical, thoracolumbar, and sacroiliac areas

Johnson & Johnson has introduced the Velys Spine surgical robotics and navigation platform. The new system, developed in collaboration with eCential Robotics, received 510(k) clearance from the FDA and is set to transform spinal surgery by offering advanced guidance for screw placement in both freehand and robotic-assisted procedures.

The Velys Spine platform is designed to support spinal fusion operations across various spine regions, including the cervical, thoracolumbar, and sacroiliac areas. It allows surgeons to plan surgeries with detailed 3D imaging and receive precise robotic guidance during operations. This system integrates with Depuy Synthes’ existing instrument lines, such as Trialtis, Symphony, and Viper Prime. J&J’s Depuy Synthes division plans to commercially launch the Velys Spine system in the first half of 2025. This novel development is in line with J&J's goal to improve its orthopedic portfolio and compete more strongly against rivals like Stryker and Zimmer Biomet.

J&J’s worldwide chairman of medtech, Tim Schmid, hinted at the launch during the company’s recent earnings call, highlighting the role of robotics in driving growth across the orthopedic sector.
