US Moves to Ban Chinese Softwa...This move aims to address escalating concerns over potential security risks posed by connected vehicle technologies
In a decisive step towards safeguarding national security, the Biden administration is advancing a proposed ban on self-driving vehicle software developed in China. Under the new rule, autonomous vehicles operating at Level 3 autonomy or higher in the United States will be prohibited from using Chinese-developed software. This move, outlined in a recent statement from the US Department of Commerce, aims to address escalating concerns over potential security risks posed by connected vehicle technologies.
Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, echoing earlier probes into Chinese vehicle connectivity, emphasized that the ban would specifically target key driver components and software, rather than the entire vehicle. "We're focusing on critical software and data management components that must be produced in allied countries," noted Alan Estevez, the department’s export controls chief. This regulatory push follows bipartisan apprehensions about the potential for Chinese software to compromise American data security. Previous reports revealed that vehicles, including those from American and European manufacturers, collect extensive data on their operation and location in China, raising fears about data sharing with the Chinese government.
As the Department of Commerce prepares to execute the rule, industry representatives will be able to provide feedback. The move highlights a broader scrutiny of foreign technologies that are deemed to be potential threats to national security.
